We spent the week underneath the Williamsburg Bridge on scissor lifts, knitting 318 fence posts while the J train rumbled overhead, deafening us. The project was commissioned by the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NBart) and sponsored by NYC DOT and Open Space Alliance… and was a ton of fun. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi! (Especially the truckers’ honks as we perched and shimmied on the 8-ft ledge.) If you’re in NYC, stop by the installation […]
Last week was an adventure: the Knitta team installed our largest scale project yet! We covered over 300 feet of AC ductwork in Etsy.com‘s Brooklyn office space. It took 20 (wo)man days and countless skeins of yarn. (There’s a contest raging on our facebook page to guess how many… get in on the action to win an iphone cover.) Jakob, one of Etsy’s general office handymen and expert driver of scissor lifts, said that before the installation the ductwork looked […]
We’re ready to hit the road with the MINI. On our way out, we’re going to tag a few places around Austin and then have a picnic with some friends, where we’re gonna pig out on Franklin BBQ (YUMM). Nothing like an entire weekend to wander in Texas spring… More photos after the jump.
There has been much clamoring for an extension, and we finally got the okay from UT’s Keeper of the Trees. We are so pleased to announce that Knitted Wonderland will stay up at the Blanton for another week, until March 25th. After you check out the photos below, click around these links to see the blog posts and flickr sites of all the hardworking volunteers. (I’m sure I’ve left some out, so if we’ve missed your link, please post to comments […]
These knitted stairs are in the lobby at GSD&M, an Austin-based ad company that’s teaming up with Google to sponsor The Industry Party on Monday night. As an official SXSW event, musicians Mother Truckers and J Roddy Walston & the Business will be featured, along with local Austin artists – including the legendary Daniel Johnston, Hugh MacLeod, Ian McLagan, Dave Mead, and of course Yours Truly. Special thanks for this installation goes to our own Catherine Smith, without whom the project […]
Photo courtesy of James Moody Willie Nelson was in Austin this weekend for the opening performance at ACL Live‘s new venue in the W Austin’s Block 21, coincidentally located on Willie Nelson Blvd. And KnittaPlease was on site to welcome him. We teamed up with Guerilla Suit to dress up the giant W on the face of the building, Willie-style. See coverage of the concert over here on Austin360, and check out this video of the installation (and note the […]
Here’s a great video from the concert, filmed from a helicopter hovering over the show. To anticipate your questions: Yes, we did hang with the plumber and psychologist (characters from this great Personal ad). Yes, we do think the Argentine hipster guy in the billboard ad at 0:25 seconds is awesome, although a little creepy. And no, unfortunately MGMT did not play “It’s Raining Men.” That was dubbed in. Enjoy! Also: a few more notes from our trip…
Luckily, we had a crew of men transfer the P to the beach on a truck, under a tarp. We finished the installation just as MGMT was doing their soundcheck, so we had our own private concert before the madness of 40,000 people flocked to the beach later that day.
Ta da! Insight just released their new ad campaign. Here are a few images of my work, but go check out the official site and then Facebook for more images and info. So lucky to have worked with so many talented people on this project. See the installation process here, here, and here. Cheers!
The lamp post at Domy got yet another sweater just in time for Austin’s annual E.A.S.T. pilgrimage. Make sure to stop by on your route this weekend – Domy’s hosting a reading tomorrow night with Bill Baird and Thax Douglas. Don’t miss it! ps See the lamp post’s previous incarnation here.
The internet has shown some love lately – check out an interview on ACL’s official page about the temporary installation earlier this month. The Statesman has a great picture of my daughter and me installing the art sign at the festival. And Juxtapoz also picked up on ACL as well as my recent trip to Bali. Check out this flickr photo taken at ACL – I love it! Unrelated to ACL… but this is way overdue. A big thanks to Art Yarn […]
