hello old friend

I was recently in New York City and wanted to see if my first pieces were still up. If I didn’t know it was there, I wouldn’t have found it. This was a bright colorful piece that I wrapped around the “Welcome to Manhattan” sign before the Williamsburg Bridge back in 2006.

Now it is the same shade of the object it covered.

This raises the question: why put something up that will eventually rot away? This is part of the experience for me. I have seen really intricate illustrations that graffiti artists have spent hours doing…only to be painted over by officials soon after completing. I have also seen beautiful work fade into the background after being exposed to the elements. This is ephemeral. It had its moment, and it shined. Now it ages as we all do eventually.

This was at one of my favorite spots, TEANY. btw….Where did you go?????

  1. This makes me wonder: what would be better? Do you want to knit with something synthetic and color fast, that will endure the apocalypse, or is it better to tag with natural materials, which will eventually decompose without leaving garbage behind?

  2. Hey Kittaplease,

I have recently discovered your blog. It’s wonderful!

I wanted to ask permission to quote you on my blog @ http://www.rivercityhomeschoolers.wordpress.com I wanted to quote when you said, “This raises the question: why put something up that will eventually rot away?
